#GirlsCan: Women Empowerment | COVERGIRL: Girls can’t? Yes, they can. Rap, be funny, be off-the-wall, rock, be strong, run the show, make the world a little more easy, breezy and beautiful.
Look I get this is a makeup commercial but I am 100000% behind this kind of discourse in advertising. Think about the overwhelming majority of women’s ads, how their foundation is sexism and fear, “If you don’t look good enough, the boys won’t like you zomg!” Advertising is the absolute rock bottom of cultural markers, and its fucking everywhere. Advertising reifies our views on gender, on sexuality, on “success” on “failure” on appearance and on behavior because (almost always) advertisers are relying on what “everyone knows” in order to create identities and narratives to sell their product. And this right here? This is taking what “everyone knows” (which anyone with a brain knows is usually shit) and flipping it on its head.
So yeah, sell me some makeup and while you’re at it have some bad ass gorgeous ladies who (thank fuck) aren’t all white telling me and girls of every age “yes you can.”
Four for you Covergirl. I really hope this is just the first of a series.
